Conus Magus

Footnotes

Conus Magus is inspired by cellular automata and specifically from John Horton Conway's  Game of Life, a mathematical model approaching the concept of randomness in a system governed by simple rules.
We tried to find our own rules by creating together a world where movement and music are in direct communication and co-creation so as to approach a degree of freedom and complexity in the same time. Starting from a desire to  negotiate the concept of time, temporal fragments and by integrating the art of photography, we explore the linearity, circularity, continuity and discontinuity of time and space in which we move.
The project is based on the art of photography and also on the mathematical model of cellular automata. Based on a game between music and movement it plays with time, order and chaos while investigates any possible relations between them. It is questioning these ideas under the prism of scaling or by finding new perspective dimensions. Simultaneously, it aims to a deeper connection within some deeper layers of the body and soul. Based on cellular automata, a mathematical model flirting between order and chaos using simple rules, the project investigates the possibility of a game which allows a degree of freedom and complexity within a dance performance. It also aims to establish a model, a personal basic creative method for dance performances. It uses algorithmic rules and applies them in time and space, thus creating a performance system comprise of minimal sounds and body gestures in order to question the complexity and freedom of the system it has been created. Conus Magus is a vessel which allows the confrontation of determinism and chaos, linearity and circularity of time, observing common connections, differences and layers of equilibrium. Moreover, it maps this new creative procedure and explores the collaboration between two different artists. At the same time it looks for new creative practices and common grounds, where music and movement are in direct communication in all stages of the creative process.
